Double materiality analysis
We take responsibility for our impact
Environmental, social and governance topics, also known as ESG, are important to us at Sortera. Our double materiality analysis considered our impact on people and the environment, as well as the financial impact that sustainability aspects in the world around us can have on us as a company.
Our materiality analysis results in several material topics that affect us and where Sortera has an impact.
Sortera’s climate and environment impacts
The E in ESG stands for Environment and we have both positive and negative impacts related to environmental topics. Circular economy, circular material flows, sustainable construction and avoiding pollution permeate everything we do.
Climate change
We contribute to climate mitigation by enabling material recycling. Our goal is to recycle as much waste as possible, and we constantly work to find solutions higher up the waste hierarchy. The way we transport materials is an important part of our efforts to mitigate climate impact. By planning our routes carefully, training our drivers in Eco Driving and using fossil-free fuels and electrification where possible, we reduce our direct emissions.
Pollution
Some waste cannot be recycled or prevented, and we make sure to take care of it properly. We have expertise in handling hazardous waste, asbestos and the remediation of contaminated land and water – all to create a more toxic-free environment for future generations.
Biodiversity and ecosystems
Through proper waste management and water purification, we support natural resource cycles. Our environmental permits have strict requirements regarding what we are allowed to do at our facilities, and we work daily to modernise the industry and apply increasingly strict requirements to protect our nature.
Circular economy
A cornerstone of our strategy is to promote the circular economy, specifically in the construction and civil engineering sector. We work to increase the rate of material we recycle, we remediate land and water, and maintain important social infrastructure to extend their lifespan.
Social responsibility at Sortera
The S in ESG stands for Social and covers everything from human rights to the working environment for employees. In our materiality analysis, we identified our own workforce, workers in the value chain, as well as consumers and end users as being particularly important to us.
Our own workforce
At Sortera, we focus on the health, safety and well-being of our employees. We work actively to create a safe and healthy work environment, with a zero vision for workplace accidents and investments in preventive measures.
Through extensive work environment training, efforts to promote diversity and continuous skills development, we strengthen our employees and contribute to an inclusive and engaged workplace. To promote a balance between work and leisure, we offer health-promoting activities, breakfast at our workplaces and employee activities that strengthen a sense of togetherness.
Workers in the value chain
We are committed to ensuring that human rights and fair working conditions are respected throughout the value chain. Our Supplier Code of Conduct is based on international principles for labour, environment and anti-corruption. Through self-audits and follow-up meetings, we ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
Consumers and end users
At Sortera, we work to ensure that our customers and end users feel confident in our solutions. Responsible marketing is a cornerstone of our work, and by being transparent with our services and products, we build long-term relationships that are based on trust. Our ambition is to be a role model in the industry, both through our services and in the way we communicate our work and our values to customers and consumers.
Responsible corporate governance at Sortera
The G in ESG stands for Governance and encompasses responsible corporate governance, business ethics and transparency at all levels. We take our commitments very seriously, and by having a high level of service and providing transparent reports, we ensure that we create trust with our customers.
Responsible business
Business ethics are a fundamental part of our business. We have zero tolerance for corruption, bribery and unfair business practices, which applies to both our employees and partners. We only work in countries with a low risk of corruption, such as Sweden, Finland and the UK, where our business partners and value chains meet ethical and environmental requirements. Our supply chain is audited to ensure that the products and services we use comply with international conventions, local laws and principles for responsible production, which we specify in our Supplier Code of Conduct.
At Sortera, we work actively to ensure that our certifications, policies and processes contribute to the responsible and correct management of environmental, quality and work-related risks. Our facilities comply with strict permit requirements. To ensure high quality and environmental responsibility, our management system is certified according to ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001, which covers all our operations in Sweden.
About ESG – environmental, social and governance factors
Sustainability often had a narrower scope in the past, focusing mainly on environmental and climate topics. Today, ESG – Environmental, Social and Governance – sets the standard. ESG is used to measure and manage a company’s environmental, social and governance responsibilities, and provides a holistic and structured way to address sustainability.
